A good starting point is Kościuszko Market Square, with its historic town hall (home to the Podlaskie Museum) and the neighbouring Archcathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A few minutes away stands the Branicki Palace, known as the "Podlaskie Versailles" — a baroque residence with free-to-enter French-style gardens, now home to the Medical University. Also worth seeing: the Holy Spirit Orthodox Church, the largest Orthodox church in Poland, the modern Sybir Memorial Museum, the Podlaskie Opera and Philharmonic, and the Planty park and Zwierzyniecki Forest with the city zoo — a good spot for a walk with kids. History enthusiasts can also visit the Ludwik Zamenhof Centre, dedicated to the creator of Esperanto, who was born in Białystok.
Plan for half a day to walk around the centre — Kościuszko Market Square, the cathedral, the Branicki Palace and gardens, and the Holy Spirit Church. Add a walk through Planty park and Zwierzyniecki Forest, or a museum visit, and it can easily fill a whole day.
