Michałowo grew out of a textile settlement founded in 1832 by Seweryn Michałowski, and still keeps its 19th-century street layout. Its most notable landmark is the wooden Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas (1906-1910), whose interior holds unique murals by Professor Adam Stalony-Dobrzański, painted with the help of a then-young Jerzy Nowosielski — today regarded as one of the finest icon painters of his generation. It's also worth seeing the neo-Gothic Church of Divine Providence and stopping by the "Niezbudka" Film, Sound and Photography Workshop, with its collection of archival regional photos. Michałowo is also a good base for trips into the Knyszyńska Forest, the Gorbacz nature reserve, and the trail of wooden Orthodox churches (Topolany, Nowa Wola, Jałówka).
The town itself can be seen in 2-3 hours; if you're also planning a trip into the nearby Knyszyńska Forest or along the church trail, it's worth setting aside a full day.
